Archipelago >> Typical
products |
You
certainly find the best typical products of Elba in the food
and wine sector as the island offers a vast selection of wine
and liquors which are perfect together with the delicious pastries,
made with recipes that go back to ancient times. The list of
DOC wines is long and guarantees the high quality of the local
wines. But the island also produces excellent liquors. The most
important one is the limoncino which is made with water, sugar
and lemon peel.
The limoncino is fresh and very popular among the ladies and
has quickly become the king of the summer nights, together with
its cousin, the arancino, which is produced in the same way
but instead of lemon peel you use orange peel. The creativity
of the Elban chefs is unlimited and if you go rummaging in the
shelves of the wine-shops or even better, entering the wine
cellar of the farms you can find excellent cherry and strawberry
liquors, but also bitters and digestives that are produced with
any wild herb from the island. The grappa from Elba is also
excellent and it is made by distilling the remains from the
wine production. The precious transparent liquor is then ageing
in wood barrels. It is almost impossible to list the range of
aromas that then give the taste its characteristics of all the
types of grappa that you will find in bottles. The variety of
the local irresistible pastries is huge too.
It is an attack against any diet which you better ignore as
soon as you get down from the ferry. Apart from the food and
the wine, Elba is famous for its production of ceramics and
the Elbans are very skilled artisans using only their hands
and the lathe, respecting the old tradition. But the artisans
design new shapes in order to meet the demand from the interior
decorators who can find accents made of precious refractory
clay and volcanic clay that resist cold without breaking. The
outcome of these terracotta jewels depend on the elegance of
the decor and the artisans' taste regarding colours. Unique
and inestimable products with some small defect that shows that
it is hand-made. |
