Tuscan
Archipelago >> History
|
The
short-sighted policy of the Italian State has continued on the
same path, using the jewel of the Tuscan archipelago to recover
criminals. This is the reason why it is still partly forbidden
to visit these islands. During the 20th century the destiny
of the biggest island has depended on the development of the
important iron metallurgy plant in Portoferraio, which has afflicted
the island with a layer of black smoke and iniquitous dust for
many years. Today economic efforts are made to enhance the tourism
and protect this incredible ecosystem. Perhaps this is the right
way towards a sustainable development.
