GIGLIO >> Giglio
Campese
|
This
is the pre-eminently seaside resort on the island with its long
golden sand-beach, framed by the Faraglione rock-spurs on one
side and by the Medicean tower on the other. The crystal-clear
water and the sand of tiny quartz crystals have inevitably attracted
mass-tourism and the splendid natural scenery has partly been
alternated by the new residences. The winds that blow from the
south and that from behind reach the Campese bay attract surfers
as well as sailors while the facing to the west gives unforgettable
sunsets for romantics. |

The Medicean tower that define one of Campese bay's versants
was erected between 1670 and 1705 for the defense against pirates.
The elevated entrance and the four cannons placed on the building's
top guaranteed protection against enemies while the two large
water reservoirs excavated on the inside, the refectory and
the dormitory offered shelter and sustenance to the inhabitants
in case of attacks. It is possible to visit the ruins of the
ancient pyrite mine, in use until the 70'ies. After surpassing
Faraglione, walking along the coast, you find the slipway and
the remainders of the plant engineering. In front of the Campese
coasts lies what is left of an Etruscan wreck, roused and plundered
by wheeling scuba-divers in 1961, that also stole a valuable
Corinthian helmet.
