GIGLIO
>> Giglio
Porto
|
This
is the island's only harbor, framed by picturesque houses that
opens up in a semicircle on the sea and is surmounted by woody
hills. Giglio Porto was established by the Romans and it kept
its original aspect for almost two thousand years. At the end
of the 19:th century an exceptionally devastating sea-storm
imposed the complete restoration of the harbor and it was amplified
at the same time. The oldest corner of the village today is
the area surrounding the round Tower where you find the houses
of a few fisher-men and soldiers that live on the island the
whole year. The round tower was erected in 1596 on the will
of Ferdinand the 1:st, Grand Duke of Tuscany, both to bring
life back to construction and to sight possible enemy ships. |

The peninsula that stretches north of Giglio Porto is called
Lazzaretto and is covered with a luxuriant mantle of pines.
It is a very charming panoramic point, an impressive cliff immerged
in the greenery of the island's vegetation and topping the sea.
The Roman Villa that the Domizi Enobarbi family built as their
residence is well worth visiting and of which some remainders
are partially submerged in the sea that it was facing. Those
who love under-water archeology can not miss out on diving in
the waters at Giglio Porto to find the Roman wreck dated back
to 200 B.C and discovered in 1978.
