This
is the smallest of Elbas' communes and its territory is restricted
to the villages' historic center and the immediate hinterland,
almost entirely intact thanks to a clever protection program
safeguarding the coast and the historic architectonical patrimony.
The charming and picturesque Cotone area, a medieval village
where fishermen built their houses on a malarial marsh, previously
drained and where they still keep their houses painted in pastel
colors overhanging the sea, is well worth a visit. |

The visit to Marciana Marina also should include a stop at the
small harbor and at the Pisan tower, built in the 13:th century
to watch over the harbor that was constantly the prey for attacks
on behalf of pirates or Saracenes.
